Institute for Leadership Development

South Puget Sound Community College’s Institute for Leadership Development provides a variety of specialized training and organizational development services that build high performing organizations.  These trainings enhances knowledge and skills through the establishment of standardized core competencies that organizations can apply to build managerial and leadership capacity and support workforce planning.  Our instructors are subject matter experts with extensive experience in business, government and public service.  Courses are designed to meet the needs of the public, private, and non-profit sectors. 

Course Offerings

 The Institute offers certificate programs and individual courses through the:

  • Certified Public Manager Program: The Institute's flagship program, this 15 month certification course provides practical leadership and people management skills to current and future management professionals.

  • County Training Institute: In partnership with the Community College Consortium of WA and a number of county agencies,including WSAC, WACO, WCRP and CRAB, the County Training Institute provides training options to county officials and staff in locations throughout Washington State. Institute classes may be taken individually or applied to the Certified Public Official certification.

  • Non-Profit Leadership Institute: This 11 month program in partnership with NonProfit Solutions NW, the Thurston County Chamber of Commerce and other local agencies gives participants the tools they need to establish and maintain effective, self-sustaining organizations within the non-profit environment. Schedules and further information will be available in June 2008.

All of our courses and workshops offer customizable curriculum packages to meet the needs of single or multiple agency groups in the public, private and non-profit arenas. This includes areas such as:

  • Customer Service Workshops:  This series of courses assists individuals and organizations in identifying what quality customer service is for their clientele, and how best to deliver it.   
  • Exemplary Leadership:  This high level series provides leaders with the knowledge and tools necessary to achieve peak organizational and individual performance. 
  • Instructor Development: This course set gives trainers the practical tools they need to deliver effective workshops and trainings.
  • Supervising for High Performance:  Courses offer tools and methodologies for effective supervision, building high morale, and creating engaged employees.
  • Support Staff Academy:  Three-day academy designed to enhance skill sets and techniques unique to the support staff function, in areas such as office operations, communication, and interpersonal relationships.  

We also provide networking opportunities like those listed below:

  • Executive Roundtable Lecture Series: Hear leading government executives share their secrets.  Learn best practices.  Keep current on community affairs.  Follow legislative activities.  Participate in facilitated networking.  This “brown-bag” luncheon series series is co-sponsored by South Puget Sound Community College and the Washington Society for Certified Public Managers.
