Theatre, Film and TV Exploration with Katherine Billings

This summer, join entertainment pro Katherine Billings and explore many aspects of the theatre, film and television including acting, directing and voiceovers.  These fun, hands-on classes are designed for ages 6 to 11 and 12 to 17 year olds.  For all classes, be sure to bring snacks for morning/afternoon breaks and a brown-bag lunch for all day classes. Instructor, Katherine Billings is an award-winning director, actor, writer and producer. Katherine received her training at the Northwestern University, U.C.L.A., London Academy of Music & Dramatic Arts (LAMDA) and with Robert Lewis, Stella Adler and David Craig. As a professional coach, she has prepared actors for auditions and appearances on Wonder Years, Bull Durham, X-Files, Millenium, Stargate, Stargate Atlantis, DaVinci’s Inquest, Deadman’s Gun, Disturbing Behavior, Nothing Too Good For A Cowboy, Last Trimester, Scare Tactics, Harsh Realm, Hot Rod, and many commercials.  All classes are held at the Hawks Prairie Campus, 1401 Marvin Road, NE, Lacey.  

Camera Acting & Voice Over (Ages 6-11)
If you like to “ham it up” in front of the camera in your family home movies, this is the perfect opportunity to hone your acting skills.  Gain confidence and let your personality shine while acting on camera and recording on microphone.  You will play with current entertainment industry scripts.  Learn about shot sizes, set etiquette, types of shooting, how to work with a microphone, audition tips, and recording session basics.  Hear samples of successful voice reels.  You are also introduced to what goes on “behind the scenes” for movies, TV, cartoons, video games, and commercial acting.

Improvisation and Theater Games (Ages 6-11)
Express yourself!!  Come join us for a week of fun, energetic, hands-on activity.  Lose your shyness and gain confidence as you create all sorts of characters and situations by using your voice, movement, and imagination.  You will play some of the most favorite theatre games and improvisations.  It’s fun, it’s spontaneous, and makes for a great summer break.

Directing & Writing for Video & TV (Ages 12-17)
Join this savvy, fun workshop and learn about the magic of making movies.  You will learn how to organize, communicate, interpret, and achieve the idea you have for a video project.   Get a glimpse of the responsibilities of the Director, Screenwriter, and a filmmaking team.  Look at samples of good story structure and how to create screenplays and teleplays.  Start your creative journey towards becoming an imaginative visual storyteller.

Auditions that Knock’em Dead (Ages 12-17)
Don’t let performance anxiety rob you of opportunities and leave you feeling self-conscious. Come learn how to rehearse for book reports, school presentations, and job interviews and of course theatre/TV auditions.  You will practice the techniques of eye contact, body language, thinking on your feet, timing, pace and when and how to use humor.  Grab the attention and respect of your audience, teachers, classmates, future boss or college registrar.  You will find out how to “deliver the goods” by practicing with an entertainment industry pro.

Summer Science Camps with Mad Science

South Puget Sound Community College and Mad Science have joined forces!  Sign on to the Mad Science Mission Teams and boldly go where curious minds love to go.  Science projects and fun hands-on activities are offered daily with two specifically trained and qualified Mad Scientist instructors to guide you in each class.  Camp fees include all materials and daily snacks.  All ages (6-17) are welcome to enroll in each camp.  Please bring water bottle with closable lid and wear comfortable clothing. All classes are held at the Hawks Prairie Campus, 1401 Marvin Road, NE, Lacey.

Claws, Codes, and Constellations
Let your scientific imagination soar as we explore animal life and habitats, follow scent trails, solve chemical mysteries and look for clues.  Crystal creations and cool tasty treats, secret slime formulas and slimy creatures—what could be more fun!  Help us create a design to launch an egg into outer space (or maybe into the parking lot)!

Earth Awareness
This camp is all about our special planet, Earth, and how to take care of its special gifts.  Mad Science campers will discover how to create a test for acid rain and how pollutants can get into our water supply.  We’ll learn about and experiment with solar radiation and the “greenhouse effect” while creating cool take home items.  Solar Cooking, mini lakes, and fun recycling, are just part of this exciting scientific discovery camp!

Mad Science introduces campers to the mysteries of life.  Take a close-up view into the world of insects, discover what secrets old bones can tell us and peek into cellular structures.  Hairy worms, flying pigs, and cellular creations are waiting to be discovered.

The Science of Sport
We’ll explore how your body, foods, depth perception, gravity, and balance all come together to create an amazing playing machine!  Check out the “sweet spot,” discover how much air your lungs can hold, how strong your muscles are, and why you need electrolytes.  Discover how your toes can influence what games you do best at.  Learn why some types of playing balls bounce higher than others and why your head isn’t made for bouncing.  It’s a fun way to learn how science influences sports.

Casting Call:  Theatre Rehearsal and Performance – Don Welch (4 evenings per week)
Join students in the South Puget Sound Community College Theatre Arts program and become involved in a fully staged college theatre production.  You will learn theory, methods and an analysis of theatre productions including acting, and/or technical theatre.  You will assist with scenery construction and costumes, explore properties, box office procedures, lighting and sound systems through practical application during the production of the quarter play. The course is not open to full or part time credit students at South Puget Sound Community College.   Instructor, Don Welch, has extensive experience in the performing arts and is the Director of the college’s Theatre Arts program.

NEW –   Beginning Stained Glass – Renate Cowan (8 evenings)
Get to know the wonderful world of stained glass and create your own stained glass panels in this introductory class. You will study the techniques of pattern design, how to transfer a pattern to glass and glass cutting. Soldering techniques are also presented. The class is perfect for metal artists to learn to incorporate glass into welded art.  Materials and supplies are not included in the cost of the class and will be discussed at the first class session. A tool kit of materials can be purchased for approximately $145.  Additional supplies can be purchased as needed.  The class is located at Hexen Glass Studio, 3006 29th Avenue, SE, Tumwater. Fire Art:  Creative Metal and Welding Studio – Loren Paterson (8 Saturday mornings)
Especially designed for experienced welders and artists, you will capture your artistic talents in welding, fabrication, and finishing for creating fire art. In this hands-on class, you will learn welding skills that include an artistic flair and will design and complete one small-scale project by the conclusion of the class. Projects can range from sculpture to furniture, garden accessories, window treatments, or a prototype of a larger project.  Size and creativity are your only limitations.  Please bring a picture or drawing of your planned project.  Safety standards and equipment are emphasized and required.  You provide materials and some safety equipment.  You are encouraged to bring a brown-bag lunch. Summer Art Exploration with Cari Von Sternberg
Explore your artistic talents through a variety of techniques presented in these fun-filled, short-term, classes. The classes are perfect for beginning and advanced artists, to experiment with three different art mediums. Instructor, Cari Von Sternberg, BA in Art, and BS in Art Education, studied with classical master painter Roberto Lupetti. Her artwork is held in both private and public collections. Explore basic sketching and painting instructions for realism oil paintings with easy techniques you will learn in this class. You will experiment with choosing and mixing colors, and learn techniques to produce various textures for a photo real oil painting. Please bring a few flowers, fruit, and/or a few photos of whatever you would like to paint. You may work from photos or from real life and many styles will be taught including still life to surrealism. Become a Certified Flagger!  This six-hour course is designed to meet the Department of Labor and Industries State Certification and safety requirements.   You receive a Certification Card valid for three years.  You must be 18 years of age and possess a valid driver’s license.  You are encouraged to bring a brown-bag lunch.  PLEASE NOTE – Preregistration is required.  You must register no later than 10:00AM the Friday before the Saturday class.  Instructor, Michelle Foy, is a Certified Flagging Instructor with extensive teaching experience.

Introduction to Tai Chi Ch’uan – Harry Bowron (8 evenings)
Designed as an introduction to Tai Chi Ch’uan, an ancient form of Chinese physical activity, you will focus on rejuvenating your body, mind and spirit.  Tai Chi Ch’uan embodies the principles of meditation, continuity of movement and breathing, flexibility and grounding. Puget Sounders Barbershop Chorus – Bob Hart (8 evenings)
Men, if you love to sing, there is a place waiting for you in the Puget Sounders Barbershop Chorus, a part of the Barbershop Harmony Society.  Singing is fun, uplifting, energizing and a great stress reducer.  The Barbershop Chorus offers a place for you to blend your voice in close a cappella harmony, explore reading music and various musical techniques.    Public performances are scheduled at least once a quarter to enhance your skills.  Join us and unleash the singer within!  Visit www.barbershop.org for more information on singing in harmony.  Director, Robert Hart, B.A., has extensive musical experience and has been a member of the Puget Sounders for many years.

Olympia Sweet Adeline’s Barbershop Chorus – Jack Anderson and Dottee Rambo (8 evenings)
Women and girls of all ages who love to sing are invited to join us every Tuesday evening and blend your voices with ours as we sing a cappella music in four-part harmony.  The ability to read music is not required.  We teach correct singing techniques for all types of music and you will discover the joy of singing with a group of women.  We sing many styles of music, from traditional barbershop to pops and almost everything in between.  Ours is a high-quality chorus which consistently wins medals in regional competitions.  In the past five years we have won 3 fifth-place medals, 1 fourth-place medal, and 1 third-place champion medal.  Singing in a group is fun, energizing and a great stress reducer.  Come and find the joy!  Co-director Jack Anderson has directed the chorus since its inception in 1965 and is very skilled in directing/teaching.  Co-Director Dottee Rambo is a Sweet Adeline Certified Director, and has directed with Jack since 1997.

Take time to make music this summer with the South Puget Sound Community Orchestra. Continuing musicians are welcome and no formal audition is required.  The goal is to have a balanced orchestra that will perform standard orchestral literature.  This is a unique learning opportunity in a scholarly environment.  Public performances will be planned for the upcoming year.  You must provide your own instrument.  A Washington State Approved Clock Hour Offering.  Class is located at Black Hills High School, 7741 Littlerock Road, SW, Olympia.  Conductor, Paul Dorwin, B.S. in Music, has over 25 years of experience conducting bands and orchestras.

Beginning Guitar I – Bill Sweeney (8 evenings) - Class Canceled
Discover what guitar playing is all about!  If you have never played the guitar or can play a little and want to learn more, then this class is for you.  You will study proper techniques, melody, harmony and some sight-reading as you and your classmates create an original piece of music together. The truly fun part is in creating and performing your own music and working with others as an ensemble.  You must provide your own instrument (music stand is optional).   A $15 material fee is required the first night of class.  Instructor, Bill Sweeney is a local award-winning musician who has extensive experience playing in various blues, hard rock and country bands from the Northwest to Alaska.  He has appeared at the Washington Center for Performing Arts, was the recipient of the Sammy Hagar Les Paul from KZOK in 1985 and is currently producing his latest CD.   He is also the Executive Director of the Olympia Conservatory of Music and teaches credit courses through The Evergreen State College, independent study program.

You will focus on simple sight-reading and guitar harmony from ensemble scores and the Diatonic Triad book.  Improvisational techniques and beginning song writing are also presented.  You must provide your own instrument (music stand is optional). Pre-requisites:  You must be able to sight-read simple treble clef lines, or have completed the Beginning Guitar I class or instructor permission.  The Diatonic Triad book is also required.  A $10 material fee is required the first night of class.
